The phone in your hand, the fridge at home, the car, the bank ATM: all have chips inside. But have you wondered who actually makes these chips, and how many companies there are? One fun fact first: what we call a "chip company" hides three different kinds of companies. Understand this and the whole world falls into place.
The book picture: author, printing press, and both
Think of a book. It needs two jobs: writing and printing.
| In a book | In the chip world | Name | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only the author | Designer (Fabless) | Makes the design, owns no factory | Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, AMD, Nvidia |
| Only the printing press | Maker (Foundry) | Builds chips from other people's designs | TSMC, UMC, GlobalFoundries, SMIC |
| Author and press both | Both (IDM) | Designs and manufactures | Intel, Samsung (both jobs), Micron |
The world of printing presses: who is how big?
For companies that build chips for others, TrendForce reports this picture for April to June 2026 (revenue in billion US dollars, market share in percent):
| No. | Company | Country | Revenue (billion $) | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TSMC | Taiwan | about 40.2 | 72.5% |
| 2 | Samsung | South Korea | about 3.3 | 5.9% |
| 3 | SMIC | China | about 3.0 | 5.4% |
| 4 | UMC | Taiwan | about 2.2 | 3.9% |
| 5 | GlobalFoundries | USA | about 1.8 | 3.2% |
| 6 | HuaHong Group | China | about 1.3 | 2.3% |
| 7-10 | Tower, VIS, Nexchip, PSMC | Israel, Taiwan, China, Taiwan | about 0.4-0.5 each | about 0.8% each |
Two things stand out. First: TSMC alone holds nearly three-quarters of the share, meaning about seven in every ten chips come out of its factories. Second: the other nine companies together are small beside it. Intel does not appear in this list because it mostly builds its own chips. It is now trying to build for others too with its "18A" process.
Who can make the finest chips?
The answer to "how many companies make chips?" has two parts. Hundreds design chips. But only a handful can make the most advanced, finest chips:
- TSMC (Taiwan): furthest ahead. Volume 2nm (N2) production began in late 2025.
- Samsung (South Korea): 2nm (SF2), first for its own Exynos 2600.
- Intel (USA): the 18A process ("1.8nm-class") in late 2025.
- Rapidus (Japan): announced trial production of 2nm chips.
- SMIC (China): expanding capacity. Reports about its processes vary, so check the latest separately.
A tale: when the customer walked away
A few years ago Qualcomm had a big chip built in Samsung's factory. That generation drew many complaints about heating and short battery life. For the next generation Qualcomm gave the same chip to TSMC. It shows how much the "printing press" matters: same design, yet the printing quality changed the experience.
The designers: who makes whose chip?
| Company | Chip name | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm | Snapdragon | Most Android phones, premium to low budget |
| MediaTek | Dimensity, Helio | Strong in mid and low budget, now premium too |
| Apple | A and M series | Only for its own iPhone, iPad, Mac |
| Samsung | Exynos | In some of its own phones |
| Tensor | In its own Pixel phones | |
| HiSilicon (Huawei) | Kirin | In Huawei phones |
| Nvidia, AMD | GPU and AI chips | Computers and the AI world |
Memory chips are another story
The chips for a phone's RAM and storage come from other companies such as Samsung, SK hynix (South Korea) and Micron (USA). These are "memory" chips, not "brain" chips.
The hidden hero: ASML
Behind all these printing presses stands one more company: ASML of the Netherlands. It is the main maker of the EUV machines that print the finest chips. So even a giant like TSMC depends on it for its finest chips.
Where is India?
India has begun preparing to make chips. News has come of efforts such as a proposed Tata Electronics plant at Dholera in Gujarat and a Micron chip testing and packaging unit at Sanand. Check recent news for their latest status. For now, the chips in our phones mostly arrive made abroad.
What it means for you
- The "name" of your phone's chip (Snapdragon or Dimensity) belongs to the design company, but a different company may make it.
- Chip making is concentrated in a few places, so trouble in any one place can affect phone supply and prices worldwide.
- When a phone says "3nm" or "2nm", remember it is the name of that "printing press" process, as we saw in the nanometer article.
Quick Q and A
Does Qualcomm own a factory? No. It has chips built, mostly by TSMC, sometimes by Samsung.
Is any modern phone chip made in India? Factories for fully modern phone chips are still in the preparation stage.
Which is the biggest chip company? TSMC in making; Qualcomm, MediaTek and Apple are big in design. The ranking by revenue changes year to year.
Figures come from public sources (TrendForce, Wikipedia, company announcements and tech news sites) as of 5 November 2026. Names and numbers can change with new launches. Check the maker's site for real specifications before you buy.
