Two names echo loudest in the phone world: Snapdragon and Dimensity. Ads say "Snapdragon 8 Elite" or "Snapdragon 6 Gen 3". But who is behind this "dragon", and what do all those numbers and "Gen" mean? Let us hear the whole story.
The start: one company, 1985, America
The company behind Snapdragon is Qualcomm. It began in 1985 in San Diego, USA, with engineers such as Irwin Jacobs among its founders. Its real skill at first was the technology that lets a phone talk to the network (the modem). That is its root, and Qualcomm's name in modems is still very big.
The name "Snapdragon" arrived around 2007 and became the brand of the phone's "whole chip". Note that Qualcomm, like MediaTek, makes the design and has other companies' factories build it (mostly TSMC, sometimes Samsung).
A factory where everyone lives
Calling Snapdragon just a "processor" is not enough. It is a small factory with different departments:
- CPU (Kryo / now Oryon): the manager. All calculations and decisions.
- GPU (Adreno): the painter. Pictures for games and video.
- NPU (Hexagon): the clever clerk. AI jobs such as photo clean-up, voice, translation.
- Modem (X-series): the postman. 5G and network.
- Camera engine (Spectra): the photographer.
The ladder: 8, 7, 6, 4
Snapdragon has four main floors. The bigger the first digit, the higher the tier.
| Tier | For whom | In your phone list |
|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon 8 (Elite) | Top end, premium flagships | None in this list |
| Snapdragon 7 | Upper mid-range | None in this list |
| Snapdragon 6 | Mid-range | Samsung A36 and M47 use Snapdragon 6 Gen 3; Moto G57 Power uses 6s Gen 4 |
| Snapdragon 4 | Low budget | POCO M8 Power uses Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 |
"Gen" means generation, so "Gen 3" is the third. An "s" (as in 6s) is usually a slightly cheaper form of that tier. Compare the real difference through reviews and scores.
The last two years: the "Elite" era
- Snapdragon 8 Elite (October 2024): Qualcomm first used its own new "Oryon" CPU cores.
- Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (September 2025): "Gen 5" was chosen to show the fifth generation. Built on TSMC's 3nm process.
- Snapdragon Summit, 22-24 September 2026 (Maui, Hawaii): Qualcomm presented its next generation (8 Elite Gen 6 and a higher version). By the company's account the CPU reaches 5GHz, and reports say it is built on TSMC's 2nm process. Check the maker's site for final names and details.
The Snapdragon phones in your list
Of the seven big-battery phones, four run on Snapdragon's mid and low tiers: Samsung A36 and M47 (Snapdragon 6 Gen 3), Moto G57 Power (Snapdragon 6s Gen 4) and POCO M8 Power (Snapdragon 4 Gen 4). All four have fair power for daily use (WhatsApp, YouTube, calls, camera), but higher-tier chips stay ahead in heavy games.
Snapdragon vs Dimensity: the real differences
| Snapdragon (Qualcomm) | Dimensity (MediaTek) | |
|---|---|---|
| Country | USA | Taiwan |
| Method | Designs the chip, factories belong to others | Designs the chip, factories belong to others |
| Known for | Long reputation in modems, cameras and gaming | Good power for the price, strong in mid-budget |
| Keep in mind | Top models are often expensive | Tuning depends on the phone brand |
Quick Q and A
Is Snapdragon always better? No. Tier, cooling and software experience change things. Compare chips within the same tier.
What is the difference between 8 Gen and 8 Elite? "Elite" is the newer naming style, in which Qualcomm's own new cores arrived.
Do cheap phones get Snapdragon too? Yes, that is why the 6 and 4 tiers exist.
Figures come from public sources (TrendForce, Wikipedia, company announcements and tech news sites) as of 5 November 2026. Names and numbers can change with new launches. Check the maker's site for real specifications before you buy.
