If you have looked at a phone in the 10-20 thousand rupee range in the last two or three years, you have read the name "Dimensity". Phones from realme, vivo, Redmi, OPPO, Samsung and more carry this heart inside. It is a MediaTek chip. But who is MediaTek, and what is its story? Let us listen.
A cook who has no kitchen
The chip world has two jobs: designing and making. MediaTek does the first. Imagine a famous cook without a big kitchen of his own. He writes the recipe and has it cooked in the world's biggest rented kitchen (for example TSMC). This is called the "fabless" model: design only, no factory of its own.
The start: Taiwan, 1997
MediaTek began in 1997 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, as a small team that split off from a large chip company (UMC). At first it made chips for CD and DVD players. In the 2000s it stepped into phones.
Here it played a clever card: give the chip plus ready software and design in one box. Small phone brands had no big engineering teams. MediaTek said, "You make the phone body, we handle what is inside." Making cheap phones became much easier, and this approach is widely credited for taking low-priced phones to every lane in India.
From "Helio" to "Dimensity"
MediaTek's phone chips were once sold as "Helio". Then came 5G, and the company chose a new name: Dimensity. It spread widely across low and mid-priced 5G phones. In research firms' figures MediaTek is often at or near the top for phone-chip shipments.
How to read the number: the ladder
The first digit of the four-digit name tells your "floor". The higher on the ladder, the more power and the higher the price.
| Tier | For whom | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensity 9000 | Top end (premium flagships) | Dimensity 9500 (September 2025, TSMC 3nm process) |
| Dimensity 8000 | Upper mid-range | Mid-priced phones with good gaming |
| Dimensity 7000 | Mid-range (most popular) | Dimensity 7400 (versions of it power several of your phones) |
| Dimensity 6000 and below | Low budget | Cheap 5G phones |
Who lives inside the chip?
A modern chip is not just a "brain", it is a whole joint family:
- CPU: the head of the house. All decisions and calculations.
- GPU: the painter. Draws pictures for games and video.
- NPU (AI engine): the clever clerk. Photo clean-up, voice recognition, translation.
- Modem: the postman. Talks to 5G and the network.
- Camera processor: the photographer. Cleans up your photos.
MediaTek's trademark has been a good mix of all this for the price. In the Dimensity 9500 it even kept all cores "big" and dropped the small power-saving ones to push performance.
Strengths and cautions (honestly)
| Good | Keep in mind |
|---|---|
| Good power for the price, especially in mid-budget. | Some people prefer Snapdragon for gaming tuning and custom software. In everyday use the difference is small. |
| Brings 5G, AI and camera features quickly. | A chip's real ability depends on the phone maker's tuning and cooling. |
| Many brands choose it, so lots of options. | Update years are set by the phone brand, not the chip. |
What next?
MediaTek set 15 September 2026 for the launch of its next flagship. Reports said the top model (Dimensity 9600 Pro) would use a TSMC 2nm-class process. For the final names and details, check the maker's site.
Quick Q and A
Is Dimensity weaker than Snapdragon? No. Both have strong and weak options in different tiers. Compare within the same tier.
Are Dimensity 7400 and Snapdragon 7 the same? Both are mid-range, but do not compare the numbers directly. Look at scores and reviews.
Where does MediaTek get chips made? Mostly in foundries such as TSMC.
Figures come from public sources (TrendForce, Wikipedia, company announcements and tech news sites) as of 5 November 2026. Names and numbers can change with new launches. Check the maker's site for real specifications before you buy.
