If a fridge is too small you end up cramming food in, and if it is too big you waste both money and electricity. Here is a rough guide, but your own habits matter too.
Rough guide (for orientation only):
1. 1 to 2 people: about 100 to 200 litres.
2. 3 to 4 people: about 200 to 300 litres.
3. 5 or more people, or a family that stores a lot: about 300 litres and above.
Also keep these in mind:
1. If you buy a week of vegetables at once, go a little bigger.
2. A single door fridge is usually cheaper to buy and can use less power. A double door gives a separate and larger freezer.
3. Inverter compressor models usually use less electricity but cost more.
4. Along with the star rating, check the yearly units used and multiply by your electricity rate.
5. Measure the space in your kitchen. A fridge needs a little free space at the back and on top, or cooling can suffer.
